Hey guys,

I am halfway through a heated grip install, and was going to use a relay and do it up all nice, when I realized it might look cleaner to just keep it all up front and tap a couple wires underneath the ignition.  I am fairly certain the solid red is power, and hoping someone could confirm for me that the black with white strip is ground???

Thank you!!!

Thanks, man! I pulled out my ohmmeter and found the wires. oddly, they were blue with a stripe for power, and yellow for ground!

Things are looking good. Now just to wire tuck. :)

You can download the owner's manual here, it's got a wiring diagram:

although what you propose will work, i wouldn't recommend it.

If you have any issues along that circuit, it will take out that whole line. Its recommended you pull straight from the battery with a relay connected to the ignition (or head light or whatever can shut that line off)

Yep.  Plus a fuse.  If the switch has a high enough amp rating you can get away without a relay.

The wire I tapped is an ignition powered wire, and I have an inline fuse in the power wire coming off it.

YES, the relay is a more electronically sound setup. When I get annoyed with it, I'll do it right. :)

Is the ignition switch rated for the current draw of your heated grips?  Even with  a fuse on your grip circuit you could overload the switch with the normal draw from the grips, burn the switch up and cost yourself a lot of money, not too mention that it will only happen on a cold day far from home.

I just have a feeling that this will not end well unless you do it right in the first place.

This.  It would be OK to use that wire to trigger a relay though.
