This may seem self evident, but can catch out newbies. If you are removing your carbs to give to a tech to rebuild, re-jet, etc, then make sure you give them a good clean with carb cleaner before you hand them over to the shop. You don't have to open them right up, but give a good cosmetic clean and maybe open up the float bowls for a clean and spray down each side of the carb throat/Venturi. Don't risk spraying cleaner on the diaphragms if it a CV carb in case the spray is a powerful one and dissolves them.
This can save you a lot of money in labour. I am working on a pair of 1971 Mercedes Zenith twin throat carbs that have sat with fuel in them for 13 years, and as soon as I could smell them I knew. [puke]
It is taking longer to clean them than rebuild them at $$$ an hour.

My sympathies.  I used to work on them, though I imagine the US emissions carbs were worse.
