OK to do 6k service a bit late?
«

Hey everyone -
I know this is a bit of a silly question, but how much harm is there in going 5-600 miles over the 6k mark for my first valve inspection ('04 S4R - 996 4V)
Thanks!

Better early than late, but the exact mileage is not that important, unless it has some effect on your warranty.

i wouldn't think that that amount of mileage over would make that much of a difference afterall if you check the actual service is every 10,000 kilometers which is longer than 6k miles, by about 250 miles or so... so you aren't really going over that much at all.

6k service is generally useless. Valves rarely change enough to cause much of a problem..You'll be fine if its even 1k miles late..BTW..newer bikes do it at 7500k.. No real change that caused this change. They just relaxed the tight standard. Unless you race your bike, then I would stick to a tight interval schedule, maybe even reduce it.

My 6k. well you can say i skipped it. All i did was new fluids everywhere except for rear shock. Belt inspection. And my valves are a bit loose. But so are my valve guides, which need to be warrantyed, so i didnt even bother doing the valves. im at 8k.

Has the bike at least had the belts replaced at some point?
General info, at the first service; I've seen closers as loose as .005", and as tight as <0, IE couldn't turn the closer shim at all, so it was actually interference.

Yes, just did the belts last weekend. When BCM does the 6k i'm going to have them double check the tension "just in case"

Not so in my experience. The first 6k causes the valve clearances to change quite a bit, since the collets are being pounded into shape. On my S2R1K, all of the shims needed changing at 7k mi. After the adjustments, the bike ran soooo much better.

When I did my valve check at about 7k, they were all between the LT Schneider value and the Ducati values. So I left em alone. That was a month and a half ago. Next month I'm going to need the 12k service, but I may take it in for the valve portion of it.

The 6000 mile service is probably the most important service the bike will get as it is the first time the valves have been checked since assembly. Did the person putting it together have a bad day? That being said there is very little chance of anything changing if you put another 1000 miles on the bike. if you are at 1 inch of clearance at 6000 miles you will be pretty close at 7000 miles. Some shops will get all dramatic and say to stop riding the bike but if you conatact a busy shop and they cannot get you in for a month suddenly it is fine to go over.
Biggest reason not to go over is warranty, If there is a warranty issue some dealers get pissy and refuse if the mileage is above. Depends greatly on the dealer.
The bike will not care about 1000 miles.

Excellent, thanks! Just did the belts but wanted to make sure that it was going to be OK (have another long ride planned for next weekend
