update...found the starting problem...the white connector that plugs into the starter relay was loose/had come out.
would this have had anything to do with the misfiring/backfiring?

the instrument panel, no tail lights, winkers is still unsolved and is a harness problem...have given myself 2 days to try and find the problem spot and then if i can`t , down to the shop.

No, it just affects the starter motor.

thanks greenmonster

i am not sure if the misfiring and lack of power to instruments/ tail/ winkers are connected but I suspect they are.

i checked all the connectors round the headlight area, all seem good. If it is inside the harness then that`s a can of worms I don`t want to open.

Bike is being picked up tomorrow for a trip to the local indie Ducati mechanic..

update

my local italian bike guru ( NOT ducati shop...robbing b`stards ) did his magic....my all in one LED tail light winker unit was the cause of the electrical problem... when he was examining it, smoke started coming out of it!! I only bought this 18 months ago...worth talking to the guys that sell it ( famous for their tail chop kits ) ?

misfire was down to ignition coils...97 monster so the original units with 20 years under their belts, tis to be expected I guess. New ones in, all good!

problem now.... too cold to ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
