alum plate under bottom triple?

S4RT- The aluminum plate bolted underneath the bottom triple clamp- what's it for actually? I fitted radiator guards and had to remove the plate for clearance. I remember my S2R had this and I assume all the other Monsters had these as well. Does it need to be there and if so what are the options. Trimming it a bit perhaps. Thanks

It keeps crap from getting flung up into the frame, and to the lower head bearing.
And on the water cooled bikes, pushes a little more air into the radiators.

Trim it.
