I suspect that some research will reveal that these are wrongly named and that they're actually from Australia.
It would fit with all of the other Aussie fauna that have lethal capability.

 We have native wasps, but European wasps/hornets have made it here and are causing enviromental issues.
That Japanese Hornet looks like a Power Ranger. Evil
