I-m in houston. I was one of the lucky few who was only without power for 12 hours. My Gf on the other hand has had to move into my house because she still doesn-t have power. We were all really lucky, no one we know on the dmf got hit too hard.

I think there is a bit of a difference between what Houston experienced and what Ohio is experiencing.

Speaking in respect to Ohio:

So you don't have power for 5 days.......big whoop.

Sucks that you lost all the food in your fridge/freezer, but shit happens.

Not sure how this is a state of emergency, though.

Seems a bit odd.

maybe I can get a FEMA card......

My friend in Columbus told me yesterday that they're expecting to be in the dark for a couple weeks  :-\

My sister, who lives in Liberty, Texas (and works for Exxon) is not expecing to have power back on until sometime in October. Her generator went up 2 days after the storm blew thru. She was lucky though, the only damage she reported was some tree branches falling on her Toyota Matrix. And even then it's just scratches and not dents.

Funny, we used to get those kinds of winds (60 mph +) in the Maritimes without much trouble. A few power outages, sure, but never anything like a state of emergency.

Then again, Toronto declared a SOE and called in the military when they got a little bit of snow...

it's not fair to paint all of toronto with the ridiculous brush that was mayor mel... he was a buffoon who didn't even own a shovel

you guys are much more used to being buried under snow anyway.  ;)

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the War Room.

There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man.  The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self. And in bacon.

I used to live in the country with a 1/2 km long driveway, on open grassland. We'd get 6-7 foot snow drifts across it regularly. Snow plows GOT STUCK in front of our house two or three times (seriously, they'd misjudge the snow, drive into the ditch, then have to call a recovery vehicle to tow them out).

Then we'd lose power for a night or two at a time. No bigge, we had a wood stove and kept jugged water for flushing the toilets :)

Ah, the good ol' days. Not the same when you live in the big city, where you rely on unionized work crews to keep things from going to pot. And any slip up on their part sends the city into chaos.
