Author Topic: mounting clip ons over the triple  (Read 1615 times)

I currently have my clip ons (no risers) mounted under the triple on my M750.  I need them to be up higher, so id like to mount them above my triple....there isnt enough grab area there now so id have to lower the bike down on the forks about an inch or maybe a little more.  Is this possible? Or is lowering the front end down not a good idea?

It's possible, but an inch is a lot to drop the forks.  Your handling will change making the bike turn in very fast.  If you try, be very careful on the first ride until you re-learn how the bike is going to react.

You may also need to fiddle with your brake lines to keep everything kosher.

An inch is a LOT to drop the front forks.  Normally, if you drop the front, you want to do it in 5mm increments.  And inch drop is around 25mm.  That will radically affect the way your bike handles and possibly introduce significant instability into your geometry.  Give it a try if you want, but realize that you're making a dramatic change.  You'll want to reset your suspension (which you can't really do with the non-adjustable forks on a 750).  And make sure you have a damper.

Why not just get some clip-ons with rise?  Tomasellis have some rise and significant adjustability. Check monsterparts.com

I have a '01 M750 and just removed clip ons mounted above the triple (done by previous owner) to return to stock bars. I have been thinking that the previous owner may have lowered the arms as you are contemplating. Can you tell me how much shock tube you have showing above the triple? I have 18 mm. If you have 18 mm as well I will be happy to sell you my clip ons. They worked great I just wanted a more relaxed riding position.

Mine are 16mm above the triple. If yours were lowered it wasnt much. For my clips to work, i would need at least 36mm, so basically double what i have showing now. I think ill just have to pay for some bars with risers.

If the 18mm includes the cap you are OK, either way, I wouldn't worry about a mm or two.

that little bit of fork above the triple should of came like that from the factory, so use your judgement, but like spidey said, 5mm increments become really noticeable once you get out there. Ive done up to 12mm on mine and im at the point where i might hit hte oil cooler on full compression.

Which clip ons do you have? there is a thread about clip ons and risers in the accessories that you might find useful

The Tomasselli's need a more space than other clip ons ive seen to bite on to, but they are fully adjustable and have good amount of rise to them, they are just a pregnant dog to set up because its almost impossible to get them to mirror each other without the aid of some strings and a steady eye.

Just for conversation sake

The tubes on my Monster (851/888 based frame) are 25 mm above the triple.

The rear is adjusted as high as possible with the stock heim joints.

I don't have a damper and I don't think the bike is squirrely.

I'll see your sake and raise you one  Wink

similar setup.
I've got the older style 851/888 hoop style frame with SBK forks that are raised about 25-30mm's in the triples for the clip ons to sit on top and I've got 25mm extensions in the bottom of the hoop where it connects to the swingarm.  The suspension is dialed in for me perfectly. I've also got a damper that has saved my ham fisted ass a few times.

And I want it to turn in even quicker still!

But please don't get me wrong here, listen to Spidey's advice about the geometry change.  How your ride your bike (ie the inputs you give it) also dramatically effect what it's going to do/not do.

yep i got 16mm showing, id need about 32mm for the forks to come up perfectly level with the top of the apex handle bar clamp. I could probably do about 30mm. Hmmm. I will contemplate this new information. Thanks folks.

I have known two people (in the last 15 years) who had their clipons mounted above the triple clamp who had sudden and unexpected tank slappers which caused them to leave the road. Both totalled their bikes and one of the riders was seriously injured.

My advice is that this situation is dangerous and shouldn't be considered nor recommended.
