Bleak Christmas

Was enduring the (nearly empty) shopping mall earlier this morning, when I couldn't quite believe my ears. Is that... no... can't be!

Yup. A schmaltzy, saccharine version of The Pogues tune "Fairytale of New York." The one that starts "It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank" and is a delightful little male-female duet of substance abuse & burned-to-the-ground dreams. Set at Christmastime. One of my favorite Pogues tunes, but a little jarring set between Bing Crosby and O Little Town of Bethlehem!

Stunned, I stood there under the little Muzak speaker in between the craft & women's magazines in Barnes & Noble, wondering if they would actually sing the whole thing. Sure enough, there's the money verse:

Wow.  I knew it was rough out there this year, but that's a bit freakin' dark for making us cheery consumers!

Wow.. even if you take out the 'bad' words in that song it's still not 'holiday music'  He'll the songs not even about Christmas - just gets the mention as the time of year to set the stage for a song about everything being messed up. 

This is sorta on the level of the Dance remix of the Cranberries 'Zombie' I heard.  One of my coworkers started to groove, and did the 'Oh I love this song, it's so cool'.  'Course I had to ask 'Do you know what that song's about?'

Not a Christmas song but: The other night at a hockey game they played Last Caress by the misfits in its entirety.

Most people/Kids in the arena don't speak enough English to understand the lyrics.
