My Marchesini magnesium wheels were painted by the previous owner and I would like to have them stripped and brought back to the original color (Gold)..

Will stripping the paint ruin the original finish and/or texture?

Will they need to be repainted?

Thanx Mucho [bow_down]

Just scuff with 400 and paint. Make sure to use a good primer on any bare metal. Zinc chromate would be my choice for piming magnesium.

Depends...

Most of them came powdercoated. If that's the case then the original finish most likely will not be salvageable.

Some of the cast mag wheels came with a zinc dichromate finish.

If this is the case pick an inconspicuous area and start with some laqeur thinner and work your way stronger from there. ZD plating is fairly solvent resistant. Even if there are no sanding scratches it most likely will look cloudy anyway but you never know.

Good luck!

Im not sure if they're cast or forged magnesiums- OEM wheels on the 996 SPS.... Can they be bead blasted ( or is it even worth the trouble)..

I would be very careful bead blasting. While magnesium is light & strong it does not have much surface hardness. Chemical strip and powdercoat might be the best bet.

I'm a paint over powdercoat guy, but unless the old finish is literally pealing off, you can scuff and paint right over it whether is is paint, primer, or powder coat. Nate does a lot of painting, PM him.
