I'd like to point out that this is for a 916, which is DIFFERENT from the 916 in the S4. If you have an S4, your belts are 93 teeth, not 95 teeth, which means that the numbers they use aren't exactly. one out the three is different. make sure you count your own teeth on your old belts when you do it and mark them.

My count for the S4 was:
Horizontal Cylinder- 21-39-33 for a total of 93 teeth
Vertical Cylinder- 12-36-45  for a total of 93 teeth
2001 Monster S4
2004 Aprilia Tuono
1992 Honda Nighthawk 750

I followed the link above, except for the number of teeth between timing marks.

My bike is a 2005 desmoquattro 996 Monster S4R, and takes 93-tooth belts.  Here is a diagram of the belt placement with the horizontal cylinder at TDC compression:

I used model paint to put small dots (not shown) on the old belts where the teeth lined up with the timing marks on the pulleys/heads, fit a cam wheel lock between the cam pulleys on the vertical head, removed the tensioner pulleys and removed the belts.  I then marked the new belts and slid them into place, aligning the painted dots with the timing marks on the pulleys/heads.

I used the MotoReva harmonic meter to set the belt tension with the head at TDC compression.  Rotate the tensioner pulleys counterclockwise to tighten the belts.

The meter, belts and tensioner nuts were purchased from Desmotimes.com
