It looks like I should replace the timing belt on an '05 s2r 800 with 6000 miles.
Who thinks I should try this myself?
I do my own oil change but I'm definitely not a mechanic.
Any advice is much appreciated.
This is a great site!!!

It's easy, take off the old ones, line up the pulley dots with the cases, then slip 'em on. The vertical one will fight you with it's spring, but it's pretty easy to tell when it's right.

I just did mine last week with the Bucci belts from California Cycleworks and it was real easy. Just line up the timing marks and its easy from there. Like Norm said, the vertical top pulley will move when you pull the belt off but just move back to the mark and slide the belt on

and dont forget to check the tension afterwards...

swapping belts is easy, and doing the tension is relatively easy, you just gotta be patient if it's your first time.. plan to make an afternoon of it.  check and doublecheck your work.

ca-cycleworks, ducatitech and a few others have online tutorials.

you'll need a few hex head wrenches, i believe a 6mm, a 5 and a 4.  some are for bolts and some for the hex-key tension method...

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

If you are seriously considering doing this i'd strongly advise getting LT Snyder's book on Ducati Maintenance.  It's invaluble.  And anyways, once you've realized how easy it all is, you are gonna want to do it all yourself!

I suspect some of our board sponsors may carry it too.  ;)

big +1 for LT's book, just keep it in the bathroom or on the bedside table and read it thru several times.
