just bought an 01 monster 600,been riding it for three days.i have no idea why it keeps dying.its happened three times all on the freeway going uphill at about 70 mph.last night i had to call a wrecker and i still cant get it started.oil and everything else seems to be adequate.the bike was serviced a year ago and only 200 hundred miles put on since(oil change, new battery, fuel filter, carb cleaned, spark plugs, chain and sprocket.looking at the service record,2 months and 50 miles later the monster wouldnt start.previous owner was charged 144.00 to adjust air mixter(dont know what mixter means or if its a typo).anybody have any ideas,it would be easy to go to a shop and let them screw me for a couple three hundred bucks, but after buying the bike id rather try to figure it out myself first.any help would be appreciated

You'll get better answers in tech.

I'm going to move it there.

Things to check:

1 - Is there enough fuel in the tank?

2 - Is the fuel filter clean?

3 - Is the fuel pump working correctly?

4 - Is there sufficient vacuum to the fuel pump and petcock?

In addition to check the above, answer this:

Does it sputter before it dies, or does it die suddenly like a light-switch?

thanx for the response, took me a while to get back.thought i had it figured out.the line near the throttle where the kill switch and the ignition is is pretty crimped up,so i plaqyed with it and thought thats why it started.then took it to a shop explained the problem and he said thats probably it .so i disconnected the kill switch and took it back to the shop, let him check my wiring and he said im good to go,bring it back tomorrow and hell do some diagnostic.no sooner than i hit the freeway going 70 it dies,no sputtering.i pull over check air filter which is new, shake the tank around and notice a screw falls, have no idea where its from.put everything back together and im off like nothing ever happened.id rather do this myself.im thinking maybe fuel line or filter, but im stumped.any help is appreciated. Really sounds like a fuel filter clogged or a fuel line slightly kinked.  The restriction in fuel allows enough fuel to seep by and fill the lines, then you run the bike for a while (not far) and run the fuel out of the lines but due to the restriction they are not refilling fast enough.  You stall and stop, fiddle with the bike for a few minutes and the lines refill.  Then the bike starts you take off and get a little ways and stall again etc......... vicious circle.

its looking like its gotta be fuel related i do notice that the line from the filter has a crack in the middle and its cracked at both connection ends.

I had a broken spark plug cable that made starting the bike difficult but it didn't cause the bike to die like yours sounds. Might try inspecting that cable. Mine was so bad that when Stu went to take it off it fell apart. The cap that goes on the spark plug came straight off the cable.  [roll] Then again mine was likely the original cable from '95.
