I ripped the spacers out today, no problems, and im very glad to report that it does a lot to streamline the front.  Only issue is that while the sigs fit right in the socket, something seems to keep them from clamping down properly even when the bolt is tight.  What did the rest of you do?  I'm thinking a rubber washer on the inside might do the trick.

btw, for those of you who are noobs like me and are just figuring this mod stuff out, the spacers are a standard item on all US distro 696 models...and they make your signals look like snail eyestalks. Between those and the "bikini" fairing, the bike looks like a disneyworld ride when it comes off the lot.
It's a really easy mod to remove, just buy some fine thread 1/2" long bolts (got some at autozone) to replace the stock ones.  Unscrew the headlight unit, remove the sigs and pull the spacer out, replace bolt with your new one and you're done. Theres a fancy little washer that keeps the chord pinned and clamps from the inside...just make sure you don't lose those when you pull the bolts out.
