There is one thing I noticed about the early 696.  If you look at my rear sets, they are painted a light silver color and they have a smooth finish.  The newer 696 have a gun metal color and rougher finish and they are harder to keep clean. My buddy has a newer 696 and he has a hell of a time keeping his rearsets clean.  Anyone else notice this?

Powder coat them!  ;D  Texture black looks cool and no need to worry about cleaning.

I have not noticed that but I have noticed that the swing arm is either fading or the newer ones are darker...

Nope... can't say that I've noticed.  Technically they aint rear-sets though, they're foot-peg hangers.  And ugly as a junkyard dog.  I'll be dumping 'em soon for some real rear-sets from Rizoma or Speedymoto......

i actually like the looks of them as long as they are powdercoated black. it hids the big dual sided swing arm. with the rearsets from rizoma it really makes the big fat swing stick out like a sore thumb.

either way i think i'll be ordering the rearsets from rizoma once they come out with the rear peg carriers because my son likes to ride on the back...

Yes. I noticed this. My 1100 has a silver rough coat that picks up dirt fast and takes scrubbing to remove. My old 696 had a smooth finish which looked better and stayed clean.

A squirt of WD40 on a rag cleans them in a jiffy.

I think they changed at the end of last year. IIRC I stopped by a dealership around December, maybe January, and I noticed a 696 with the "new" finish. I thought it looked better but I thought it wouldn't be able to clean it, like the swingarm. WD40 huh . . . I'll try that soon. My swingarm looks like shit and every time I try to clean it, it stays dirty and shreds the rag, which makes it looks worse.
