There is a torque spec.

Yeah, I was looking at the torque spec but I couldn't find a cap wrench that fit the filter on the way home.  Then when I was tightening it I realized that the lower exhaust pipe is in the way.  I could get one of my strap wrenches onto it but I don't know if a cap wrench can slip in there past the exhaust.

It can on mine, with the Amsoil filter.  The K&N has a 17mm nut welded on the end.

I have been battling this for months now. I've changed the filter 3 times, tried all sorts of torques, and it still is leaking, not much, but enough to coat the pan with oil. It is definitely coming from the filter. I have a K & N on order which has a soft O-ring. Hopefully this does the trick.

Yeah, good filters and I think Wix makes the Amsoil filters.

I've seen this post several times here.  And I have personal experience.  You really gotta tighten up the oil filter a lot more than 'hand tight and a little more.'  Even though I've used that rule for everything else I've EVER worked on, it just didn't work with my s2r1k.  I had to use the wrench to tighten the filter until it didn't leak.

.....  never had to do more than hand-tighten any other oil filter on any other bike or car I've ever worked on.... but first oil change on my M696 - using Ducati filter - and sure enough... small leak.... tightened it a little more and leak all gone... went for a long hard ride and as I'm parking the bike up in the garage.... tiny leak from oil filter again.... soooo tighten a little more.....

Put a strap wrench on and cranked it home, no more leaky :)
