Posting this problem b/c a friend has had a recurring problem with his '02 748S.  The bike had the same problem last year and the fuel pump, filter, hoses, relays, fuel level sensor, plugs, battery were all replaced.

Problem:

It died a few times during rides under different conditions, throttle, gears, etc. but would start back up.

Then the problem quickly became more frequent and the bike would not run after start up.

All mentioned above were replaced last fall and the problem went away.

This spring bike was ridden approx. 1,000mi and the issue reappeared.

Turn the ignition....lights/gauges/fuel pump all turn on/prime properly.  The bike will start and idle for 3 secs then gradually die.  No amount of throttle will help.  Tank has been taken off a few times and the bike will run for a few minutes after the tank is reinstalled, but then the issue comes back.

I am trying to help him figure it out tonight, and any input you guys have would be appreciated.  He has posted a complete write up here:

1) Try lifting the tank, perhaps the air filters have given up.
Sometimes foam air filters collapse internally, they look fine but won't flow much air.

2) Hotwire the fuel pump, perhaps the wiring just isn't getting the job done.

Thanks for the suggestions.....I will check the air filters.  Can't we unplug the fuel out hose and check to see if the pump is actually cycling fuel by sticking one end into a catch container.  Bare with me, I have not actually put my hands on the bike yet, so I'm just brain storming here.

Is it possible the injectors aren't spraying?  Can I check their function by just opening the air box and looking at the throttle bodies?

It appears that the fuel pump is doing it's job, as the bike *will* run for a short period of time.
I suspect it's shutting off once the engine starts, for some reason.

The injectors are spraying, because the bike does run.
They may be shutting off electrically, but AFAIK you can't hotwire those.
