Does anybody know the specifics on this new rule that is coming up?

I know the limits on the engine usage, but will this rule carry over into next year as a full season rule, or will they do the same and just implement the rule for the last third of the season as they are this year?

Another question about the rule actually saving the factories money:

Essentially the factories are most likely using more expensive and exotic bits in the engine to keep the same performance, yet gain a bit more life out of the motors.  I had heard Yamaha comment on that, so wouldn't the expense of designing/using more expensive parts offset building an extra engine or three as they are currently set up?

How does this affect each rider's two bikes?  That's already two engines in use.. or does each bike get the allotment.

For Motogp?

I haven't seen anything, but it's probably like F1's. The teams would have a maximum number of engines available to race with, though ones not raced probably would not count.

Yeah its for MotoGP.  Starting at the Brno round they have a limited number of engines to use the rest of the year with points penalty being assessed per engine used past the allotment.

I didn't know about any engine rule changes this year. I think I read where next year they may be limited to only one bike at a race, no #2 bike sitting in the pits. I also remember reading something about X number of engines for the whole season. Something like them being "sealed" and an engine having to last a team maybe 2-3 races. These aren't stock spec class motors we are talking about here. They are at the absolute limit in design, technology and performance. Don't they have to have some basic between race maintenance other than oil and filter change?

Jester, which mid season rules changes are you referring to? And someone please correct or confirm my take on next year's engine rules. I also question the real money saving effects of the new rules. I wonder if AMA/DMG has a hand in this?? laughingdp bang head

Note this is an old report... some of this has been discussed and modified already ( I think ).

President of the FIM and Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta outlined the new rules that will be introduced for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

2009:

1) From the Czech Republic GP in Brno and for the final seven races of the season riders will be allowed to use only five engines.

2) Two post race sessions will remain, Barcellona and Brno where official riders can partecipate and not only test riders as previously announced.

2010:

1) The number of engines to be used for the entire 18 race season will be 6 and they will be sealed and a remote monitoring system system will be put into operation and engines checked as a rider leaves the pitlane.

2) A 10 point penalty will be applied if teams are forced to change engines and will be applied to a rider’s championship standings and 10 points will also be deducted from manufacturers standings, which includes satellite bikes.

3) Testing will be limited to a total of 8 days next year.

4) Only one bike per rider will be permitted. If a rider damages a chassis, a replacement chassis will have to be offered for technical inspection.

5) Only 5 technicians will be allowed to touch the bike during practice sessions.

6) The minimum weight will be increased by 2 kg to 150 kg for four-cylinder bikes.

7) No rookies will be allowed to go straight to a MotoGP factory team. They will have to go to a satellite team for at least one season, after which they will be allowed to join a factory team.

Discussion regarding dropping Friday afternoon practice sessions are still ongoing.

Yamaha has already confirmed testing a version of their "long life" motor after Barcelona, but that was the only team I think I read about using them so far.

What wil they do if it's a wet race, then the track dries mid-race? Change the tires?

What if a rider wads his bike in the last practice before qualifying?

They'd have to drop the flag-to-flag rule for that no? Or does a dry-wet race become a NASCAR-style exercise in pit crew fire drills?

Yeah, it's definitely par for the course in endurance racing. But going from dry-wet or wet-dry involves more tweaking (different tires, different suspension, different rotors & calipers), no? I'd think for a sprint race they'd want to red flag, give the crews time to set the bike up for rain and restart.
