Truck with an R-title

Im considering a truck that has an r-title, the price is right, the miles are better than a lot of what ive seen out there, and it's clean.

Im told it was hit on the passenger side (don't know where) and that it was professionally reconditioned.

I don't expect it to be perfect.

Im on the fence about it.

My dad had a R-title accord a while back and the thing was perfectly fine. 

What are your thoughts?

I'll assume that means rebuilt, so it's like a salvage title.
I think if it checks out O.K. mechanically and structurally, it shouldn't give you any more trouble than any used vehicle. My fathers car was hit and totaled, we bought it from the ins. co. and repaired it, and he's still driving it. OTOH,
I've heard horror stories about shifty people welding two cars together to make one good one, etc., so I'd give it a very thorough inspection before you drop cash on it.

My thoughts exactly.

Im still looking though.  Craigslist is turning up a couple possible deals (for a change)

If it was done right...

it's right.

I've clipped cars before...

front clips...

rear clips...

and roof clips.

If everything works, and the car will pass muster on a 4 wheel alignment go for it.

My gramps was a car fixer and did salvages all the time

it would take him months to fix and sell a 5000 dollar car

I don't see many guys taking the time to do it right anymore

it really is a bummer that the shody ones have ruined the image of that business

How does the price of an R title vehicle compare to a regular title?  Or how should it?

I know they're worth less but what's the rule of thumb? 20%? 30%?

I think it would depend on the quality of the work

if the truck looks to be better than new

pay the man his wage (if he is the one who did the work)

if this is an owner that got it repaired then I would say 30-40% off book

Just remember that if you ever want to sell that car.........you will get nothing for it.


However, buying a fixed salvage car (as mentioned above properly) can be a good deal. You'll just never be able to get shit for it when you sell it.

Know of anyone in the repair business with a frame rack?

That's the biggest thing with a truck.  Just had a friend looking at salvage/repairable trucks.  He took each one to a body shop and had it put on a frame rack and measured to make sure things were straight and that no cutting/welding had been done to the frame.

He ended up scoring a nice super duty for about 2/3 of what the dealerships wanted for the same thing... as for resale value, if you plan on driving it for a while and putting a shitload of miles on it, the title branding won't matter.

Hell, I'm rolling a salvage volvo right now... gonna drive it till the wheels fall off, so i could care less about resale value.

I bought my suby as a rebuilt.  It had about 11k on it at the time and I have since put about another 125k on it without a problem.  All comes down to the person that did all the work.  Can you trust them?  If you can't I would continue the search.
