that color combo just begs for the rear subframe to be painted red.

beautiful bike.

I've been thinking about doing this.  I wonder how involved removing/ smoothing and painting or powdercoating would be.  Maybe we'll see come winter.

well i'm a 1/3 way there. not sure if i want to tear the whole bike apart or not. but if i do, i will be smoothing that subframe and swingarm and matching to the mainframe.

If you go this route, be a pal and take lots of pics of the demolition.  The only thing really holding me back at this point is not knowing how involved removing the subframe is.  Looks like some of the engine mount bolts go would have to be completely removed as the subframe is 'under' the main frame.

The moto-corse 1100 has a smooth/ painted subframe so I know it can be done.

Both engine bolts and rear suspension are hooked to the subframe, but i'm not certain you had to remove too much. ie you can unhook the shock, pull out the front bolt and sides and loosen the rear , rotate it a bit back then put the front back in then take the back out. as long as you,re supporting the engine from underneath i think this could be done. but we will see. i for sure have to take the front frame off. and if i see that the subframe looks like it will slide out i'll let you know.
