Brake Caliper Positioning

Sort of noticed this after my trip to the Italian Car Show.


Why are the calipers on the high end cars positioned towards the "rear" of the front rotor?

When most cars the calipers are positioned on the "front" side of the rotor?

both my jetta and lexus have the former positioning. My cousin who has a crossfire (read: mercedes....all the engine parts are stamped mercedes) have it the samw way.

I know from being around Indy Cars they are positioned in the "rear" of the front as well.


Performance issue? Why?

Type of suspension linkage? No room on top?

I've seen mercedes with the calipers toward the front.



It is just odd.




I think Dan might be on to something about suspension linkage.

Steering rack position & CoG determine caliper location as far as I can tell.
