620 motor, good to learn on?
«
on:

A local guy has a 2006 Duc 620 motor for sale. Wiring harness is there, but no ECU, headers. Motor mounts are both cracked, rear one nearly sheared off.
I want a motor to practice working on. I am only interested in 2V motors. Any reason I should avoid the 620? Is it radically different from other Ducati 2V motors?
Guy wants $550 for the motor, prolly take $500. It only has 14 miles on it! A gal bought it and wadded it up bad on her first ride.
Any advice appreciated.

I'm no expert, but from what I understand the 620 is probably one of the better modern Ducati motors for learning. It's air-cooled, not many bells and whistles, and cheap. I've got one and have learned how to wrench on it. Nothing's blown up yet on it, after 10,000 miles.

Nothing weird or extra special to note about the 620. You'll only be missing an oil cooler s bits, if you really get into learning every part.
Clutch is the Wet ATPC, so that's a little different than the old wet clutches and of course the dry. But as far as the heads and most of it... it's same same as the vast bulk of modern Duc 2v plants.

Define "practice working on"? Take it apart and see how it works? Okay, doable. Put it back together to see if you can? Useless, IMO. You won't know you did it right unless you can start it.

For $500 you'd probably be better off sourcing an older carb'd model with the capability of it running. Otherwise you won't have the ability to check your work to know if you got it back together correctly.

Also, don't get me wrong-a well trained mechanic can tell sans it running, but if you're learning on it, you won't know-it's the easiest way for a newb to check their own work.

Motor's a paperweight with cracked mounts. $550 is waaaay too much, especially for a 620. Try to get him to give it to you.
