Who here knows televisions?? .. Specifically: rear projection.

I have a 2003 Sony KP57WS510 that needs some work done.
The service manual shows the screen in 3 layers. Can i take those layers apart and clean them individually?
There are some funky looking places around the bottom corners. Looks like moisture seepage with maybe a touch of mildew.
I think my son, now old enough to know better, may have tried to give someone on tv a drink. [bang]

At least he wasn't responding to someone on screen saying "hey, throw me that hammer, would ya?!"

;D

[laugh] yeah, that would be bad. I've been looking around for a new screen, just in case. They're virtually impossible to get.
I did find a place that can get me any or all 3 pieces, but they would cost more than i paid for the set new. :o

Anyway, i took it all apart last weekend to do a few other repairs but didn't try to disassemble the screen.
Downloaded a copy of the service manual. This is what it shows.
#'s 3, 4, 5 are taped together with what looks like electrical tape. I just wasn't sure if there might be some sort of glue or other sealant between them. To keep air out or some such nonsense.

Any reason you couldn't just stick a piece of glass in there?

just a piece of glass instead of the stack? that won't cut it.

you need material that that is translucent enough to let the projected image through, but not so opaque that it "blocks" the image.

i'd have to see what the labels for those parts are, but the stack is likely a fresnel screen, a lenticular screen, and a protective (possibly anti-glare) screen.

the parts that are taped together should be the lenticular/fresnel screens. i seem to remember them needing to be in alignment with each other.

they should just be taped on the outsides to hold their alignment with each other.
