First ride... : ( And the LAMB/PKUP

After getting the bike home from the dealership yesterday I decided to wait until today to ride it. I was hungry, tired, and didn't want to go for my first ride feeling off. Not to mention the sun was going down and there wasn't much light. So today after running a few errands and putting my kid down for a nap I decided to gear up and go for my first ride.
I started off by taking it to a near empty parking lot a couple of blocks from my house to do a little slow-speed work and find the sweet spot for the friction point and shifting. Once I got comfortable with that I did a few laps on this long four lane divided road in order to feel the acceleration and braking ability. When that was finished I decided to take her out on the open road.
The weather was a stifling 30 degrees (F) but I was immune to the cold... too much adrenaline and happy thoughts to contend with. After over four years of waiting it feels incredible to be on two wheels again. It was a short ride, less than twenty miles round trip but it felt great. I turned around earlier than planned because it started snowing.
My only concern is that about half way through the ride a light on the console came on. It would go off when I was stopped at red lights or riding at low speeds but would come back on once I hit about 45 mph. I never got close to the 6K rpm limit for break in. I looked in the manual and the light that came on indicates:
"EOBD ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS LIGHT" (AMBER)
The engine ECU illuminates this light steadily to indicate the presence of errors leading to engine lock.
The bike was running fine but it does have a little trouble starting cold. I was wondering if this is just an electrical glitch because it's brand new or what? I won't be riding again until the snow is gone and we're supposed to get between 3 and 7 inches over the next two days. I'm going to call the dealership on Tuesday when they open but was wondering what you guys think.
Minus it being difficult to start and the light coming on, everything was smooth and thoroughly enjoyable.

If you read through your owner's manual there is a section that explains how to get the trouble codes that are available to the owner. If you can get that code and what it is that may shed some light. The dealer can get much more info with the scan tool. Anyway, no, the bike will not fix itself, but if it is running well, just ride on down to the dealer. I would call them first.

I'm sorry your brand new bike has a check engine light coming on.
While the bike is running, and while stopped, you should be able to get the reason code for the CEL by pushing the switch on the left control pod forwards.
You can read the codes in your owners manual on page 37.
I really, really, REALLY hope its something other than LAMB.
You can read my thread on my gf's 696 and everything we went through last year because of that CEL error here:
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=27988.0
Here's another thread that another forum member had started for that same CEL code:
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=25371.0
His bike was solved with a new Air Temp Sensor.
Here's another thread from someone whi ran into the problem back in December:
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=32734.0
I don't know if that forum member got their issues resolved, but at that time, my dealer said that there was a new ecu flash from DNA that was supposed to resolve the issue. If you are lucky, that's all it might take to get your bike straightened out.
Good luck,
BC.

When I picked my tricolore up in june of 2008 the EOBD came on the first time that I took it for a ride,I phoned the shop and was told to return it riding at a reduced pace. On arrival back at the shop the tech coupled up to the diagnostic's and it read that one of the cooling fans had gone caput, the next day new fans were fitted and bingo the bike was fixed.
I suggest that you contact the shop and if the weather is bad load it back on the truck and return it so that they can fix it.
I hope this is only a hiccup and that the bike is the stuff of your dreams

I got the LAMB...
After reading a few of the replies, I went out and started the bike up to see what would happen. It started right up but the light came on after a minute of idling. I'm gonna call the dealership. Hopefully they say I can ride it up... I don't really want to inconvenience my friend any more than I already have.

Maybe the dealer should pick it up at your place - isn't this a warranty issue which should be fixed without inconvenience to you?

Well, on the bright side; this is happening in the winter instead of right in the middle of riding season. Hopefully, the dealer will get it fixed and back to you in short order. Sucks that you have to deal with it though, probably takes some of the shine off the new bike. Don't despair though; it's a brand new bike, they should fix it with no quarrels.

It doesn't get more true than that. Last spring, on the first nice riding day, I had my rear brake caliper go through my rear wheel. That had me off the road for until almost early summer. Talk about frustrating. Let them use the cold snowy weather to get your bike right so that come the 70 and sunny days you are all set to ride without a care.

I called the dealership today and they said to bring it up when I can so they can check it out. They said unless its leaking oil or running weird that it should be okay to ride. They said at the worst it might be running a little lean or a little rich because of a probable fouled O2 sensor, but being that it's thirty degrees outside and not a hundred, the engine shouldn't sustain any damage. They said if I wanted to use it for riding locally in the mean time until I can get it up to the dealership I should be just fine.
Hopefully the snow will go away and the roads will clear so I can ride up to Louisville and get the bike taken care of. Besides, I've got to go up there to pick up my license plate and the tinted face shield that I ordered.

I went to start it up today and it didn't want to start. When it did I got a different CEL error. This one said PKUP or pickup sensor? Now what's going on?

call the dealer, have THEM pick it up. if not call the card number that you got in your packet. if they don't help, call DNA. don't let the dealer take the lazy way out on this one. be firm, be nice.
