I have the slip-on with air filter and ECU but it's running rich.

Can i plonk in the stock ECU and ride it around or will this kill the bike?

I was going to get it tuned again (by someone who knows what they are doing - ie not Frasers!!!) but if a stock ECU will work i'll just use that instead.

BTW - After taking the CBR through Putty Rd yesterday and getting onto the S4R today for the first time in 6 weeks i have fallen in love all over again. It's just so chuckable. I can't bring myself to sell it and i decided it is back re-instated as daily rider.  waytogo

I forgot to add i am looking for fuel consumption improvement. I don't care about power increases at this stage.

Stock pipes i was getting 200km/tank on open road and 140km for my peak hour traffic and i was ok with that.

With slip-ons and the ECU, i get around 95km in peak hour traffic when the fuel like comes on.

i would leave the ecu that came in the kit with the slip ons and get it tuned properly. having said that, there's not much tuneability in the std or D/P ecu's, you can adjust the trim, set the co's and the idle and that's about it. your consumption seems high, my 996 S4R get's 180 to 200 when i'm on the open road and around town i get about 165 to 175 all before the light comes on. I wouldn't imagine that changing back to the stock ecu will offer any benefit, if it's had a poor attempt at a set up with the d/p then it will still be poor with the std one, hopefully a local can offer a decent shop to sort it out for you.

yep i know what you mean.My s4r i can't stay off it!Diablo's front and back and Wilbers rear shock ( German ) + 14 tooth sprocket , Termies , wide bars and everything dialed just right and i'm peaking when i dump the clutch, give it some stick coming out of a corner with the front end lifting , slot it to the next gear , no clutch. That sounds a bit radical, but i pick my moments ! So much fun !!!!!As for the ecu ,no idea , sorry. Huh?

Cheers Loony, before you replied i decided to just chuck on the stock ECU and took it for a burn around the block. It ran fine.

I figure whoever setup the DP ECU made it hellishly rich as the bikes consumption was fine prior to fitting the pipes. Shouldn't i see any consumption improvement with the stock ECU as the bike is supposed to run fairly lean from factory? I figure it'll run the lean settings again and consumption will be near stock or are there other things they change?  Huh?

I'm going to call a shop tomorrow and speak to them about tuning it. If there are only a few settings that can be changed, i wonder whether i can just drop off the ECU and they check it out without me needing to bring in the bike? It's always annoying to drop off the bike somewhere not near work.

Is it worth going the PCIII route?

The S4R's only have a 14L tank so i'm not sure if that is the same as your 996. The peak hour traffic consumption is close to 10L/100km at the moment whereas i was getting around 7L/100km stock. Our CBR1000 w/slip-on gets mid 7's in the same conditions.

You should take the bike back to where you had it tuned and get them to do it properly.

yours has the plastic tank then, yes? mine is an 03 S4R with the steel tank so i have 15.5L capacity. unfortunately you need to take the bike in as they will (should) adjust the co's and idle on the throttle bodies, the overall trim adjusted via the ecu but needs to be in place and running.
yes it will be leaner on the std ecu, did the shop fit the pipes/air cleaner/ecu for you? if they did i'm guessing they didn't tune it at all.
the bike will run fine with the D/P ecu, like anything it needs to be set up, once done, no worries. the PCIII is an option but really, with the cat in place and just slip ons the D/P ecu will be fine, spend your cash on getting what you have set up properly first.
Rather than just calling shops at random, wait for a reccomendation from a member here, word of mouth is the best advertisement and you're more likely to get good service from a shop that has happy customers reccomending them.

Yep it's an 08 or whatever the last year they made them.

I'm going to call Desmo Clinic tomorrow and ask them to look at it. You are right, get this sorted out first then look at other options if necessary.

Your bike is currently burning (maybe NOT burning) almost 50% more than stock....
That's not in any way right.
Have it tuned waytogo

If the stock ECU will work, then you can cash in alittle by selling the DP ECU?

An update for anyone who is interested.

Went to D Moto and had a chat. Got it all hooked up and the Co2 wwas supposed to be around 4 and it went off the dial (which went to 7) LOL.

So no wonder i was getting crap mileage. They tuned it up and it's running the best it ever has. I have a tank of 95 in there at the moment and will ride the next few days to see how the mileage stacks up but i think there should be a significant improvement over the 95kms until fuel light.

Yep I'd say you should be getting much better numbers now.
I'd say you will likely see 130+ from it now and maybe even more if the right wrist doesn't get too involved.
