automotive fuel injector question. need help

SO i was dong some work on my car, replacing the lead from the alternator to the starter relay and i needed to remove the fuel rail as part of the elaborate path to get to it.

during my wrestling match, i broke the little green tip off of one of the injectors. underneath is the metal tip with all the tiny holes...

so how important is this piece? i really do not want to spend $100 on a new injector.

That part is in fact very important.
Go to a salvage yard, and get a whole new fuel rail with the injectors at your earliest convenience.

I'm of the opinion that as long as the o-ring is in good shape, and the holes are not blocked, you should be able to put the injector back in with no problems. I dont think you need that little green thingy for anything important what so ever.  None of the injectors I've ever worked on have them.. but they surely dont look that important to me!

the 'shower head'....it's where all the injector holes are located...the thingy that makes the 'spray'

How the hell does it last?

Injectors used to spray because of the pintle/plunger and seat shape.

my confusion comes from them forcing high pressure fuel through a plastic orifice.

fuel, regardless how clean it is, is abrasive.

These 'improved' devices can't last very long.

the actual orifice is metal, in the center of the plastic piece
here's a better pic.  i guess it is moot though, i just ordered a refurbished matched set for just a bit more than a new single injector.  i figure with 180k, replacing them all can't hurt.

they do last....but, as you say, depends on fuel quality; here in panama, at times we have to service injectors or if not serviceable, replace them...at times at 50k kms, me personally, take mines to service every 2 yrs...you know, ultrasonic cleaning, replacing o rings...if god permits, this year i'll do the m620's injectors

In 180K I think those things have clicked open and closed a whole lotta times
