Going to the Sun Road "The Shining" movie credits- Has anyone taken a ride here?

I was watching the movie "The Shining" this evening and in the opening credits the road that was used looked absolutely stunning!  My curiosity got the best of me so I decided to search the internet to find what road was used. Low and behold it's Going-To-The-Sun-Road.  Apparently it goes through Glacier National Park in Montana. I was just wondering if it was worth making the trip up there to ride the 50 mile passage and if anyone has done this ride? I am guessing if Stanley Kubrick put it in one of his films it must be pretty good.....

If anyone is wondering what I am talking about here is the scene and the road...You have to have the sound on so you can hear the creepy version of "Symphonie Fantastique: Dies Irae" and watch it in 480p

   I grew up in Montana and of all the National Parks I've visited, Glacier is by far my favorite.  The best way to go is take Highway 83 which runs north between the Swan and Mission Mountains.  On the way up if you have time, I would recommend stopping just north of Seeley Lake and hiking in to see Morrell Falls. Once you get into the park, the Going To the Sun Highway is breathtaking and well worth the trip.  The ride can be slow at times (which is good) with heavy traffic and cyclists, but I guarantee it will be one of the most beautiful and scenic rides you've ever done.  When are you planning on going?

The outside scenes of the lodge in Kubrick's "The Shining" was filmed at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon -- beautiful lodge without question now that it is restored.  The interior scenes were filmed in England on the movie set that emulated the Ahwahnee Hotel at Yosemite itself.

The road filmed is the "Going to the Sun" road at Glacier National Park as mentioned.  I've driven it, ridden on a motorcycle and bicycled as well -- worth the effort.  Just be wary of tired bicyclists and slow moving RV's. 

If you should make it that far north there are some other great rides up there and North into Canada as well.  One day I want to do a solid 2-week trip in early September -- if/when I ever get the time again...

Mother and I live just down the road from Timberline. Its an amazing ride up to the lodge from our house (1500 ft to 6000+ ft elevation) and the view is really cool. After you hit the Sun Road in Montana, head this way.

That would be a kickass route, whether by car (or especially) by bike.

+1 to everything Mike D said.  I lived in Whitefish, MT for 8 years (about 25 miles to the entrance to the park) and rode the Sun highway many times.  It's amazing.  Just be prepared for tourist driving very slow and distracted.  Hwy 2 along the southern border of the park isn't a bad ride either.  Heres a pic from Lake MacDonald, just inside the west side of GNP.

Sounds very cool.  And, one of my all time favorite movies. 

BTW, for those who live anywhere near the Hudson Valley in NY, the hotel that Stephen King frequented and was the inspiration for the book is called the 'Mohonk Mountain House'.  It's in NewPaltx NY and is pretty cool itself.
