I'll come out on this one. Been thinking about building an adventure/touring bike using the HM1100DS as a platform.
My Hyper Evo is evil in the best way and I dont want to neuter it to the tune of 10-15hp by fitting a big tank and losing its intake mods. A CCW tank is an excellent idea for my proposed build, but not for my evil Evo as I have it set up. It is a light crank, race style motor that performs magnificently in its role and I wouldnt change a thing. Anything in the cases that spins has been put on a lathe or drilled at the factory, add to that higher comp, bigger ports, hotter cams and different combustion chambers giving the Evo a wonderfully aggressive character. My sportbikes mates struggle to keep up. Despite appearances the only thing the Evo and DS motors have in common are bore and stroke and valve sizes.
I would buy a Cagiva Gran Canyon if I found one but that aint gonna happen unless I move into Speeddog's neighbourhood.
A two valved, aircooled, lazy , heavy crank motor with an actual flywheel, fuel range, luggage capacity and the right ergos for me and the GLW is in my thoughts. We have tested the MTS1100, ST2, E900, E750, 900SS, 750 Bifaro etc and the Hyper suits us two up. So why not a DS 1100 Hyper with big CCW tank and DP luggage, screen and dual sport tyres? It will be down 10-15 hp on my tuned Evo but have a smoother mild cam motor with creamy midrange power. I have tested and tuned the DS1100 motor for others and it lopes along nicely. My Evo doesnt lope, it charges.
How does this recipe sound?
CCW tank kit,
DP luggage kit (got some bags and rear bracket for case),
Fabbri touring screen,
TKC 70 tyres,
Sargant Seat (got one customized for pillion riding),
Maybe slightly higher bars
PCV and optimiser tuned to the CCW pods kit,
Leave the stock exhaust CAT but maybe slip ons to not ness with luggage,
If needed a heavier flywheel from an early ST2 ( gosh they're smooth),
GPS mount,
Maybe some pod socks.
What else you reckon?
I have discussed this with others and what makes the Hyper DS a good platform are the MTS style motor, light weight and dirt bike ergos. Stepped seats are out because my pillion in a million cant sit "up there", so the MTS and ST2, etc are out. Water cooled 4 valvers are out and the Hyperstrada 821 and 939 are way too tall. I want two valve grunt and simplicity. E900s cost nearly twice that of an HM or MTS1100DS.
So I have outed myself here with this self indulgent plan. The same but two very different bikes.
The idea of selling my Hyper Evo and hotting up an M1100Evo has crossed my mind. Then I could find a HM1100DS to modify, but the HM1100Evo is a comfortable M1100Evo for old guys with old injuries.
The Hyper Evo could in time also be my track bike as I have noticed my Gixxer now makes me suffer on track days. Old sporting injuries have caught up with me and I need a week to recover from a day at my favorite
track. Some spare Hyper wheels with slicks, hmmm.
Anyone know of a GC I can buy and send to Jenny Craig?
