PC Fontish kind of question

I'm trying to figure out what app would be the best to produce some album cover art. I guess it's CD cover art now. Basically want to have the look of 3 letters carved in gold on a gray marble background. You know how you see letters chiseld into marble on a headstone or public building. Yeah, like that. I'm sure I've seen that reproduced online somewhere. Photoshop? Last time I opened it I got an error message and haven't tried since. Don't force me to figure out what's wrong.

gimp is like a photoshop but open source & free.  I am not sure how you would accomplish the effect you are describing.

go to microsoft word.... click on the wordart feature. choose  a marble background, then pick a style from the wordgallery you like, then once you have typed in what you want it to say, then you can click on color, shading, depth options
