Fork update on my 99 750...my idea vs path of least resistance

OK,
This all started when I decided I wanted to update my braking system from the old single disc front to a twin set up...rather than just update to a 900 front wheel and caliper, I thought...since I want better breaking, maybe I should look to a 748 as a donor..

I think this is what I want to do...semi cost effective and fairly superior in performance.

I would like to essentially use the whole front end from a 748. My concerns are triple tree. Will I need to obtain the lower section from the 748 triple tree? Is the geometry/placement of the fork tubes, steer tube and bearings the same as my old monster?

My plan:
53x53 748 3 way adjustable fork legs
748 front wheel and brakes (calipers, rotors and master
748 top plate and if I have to the lower or complete triple.

As much as I'd love to drop the cash on a set of olhins, I have to be honest...this is a 99 monster...Its got low miles and lots of nice mods, but that suspension on my bike just reminds me of the kid with the 91 civic with the $7k in wheels  ;D

Thoughts? Input? Suggestions? I'm a Duc newbie, so don't beat me up too much!  [roll]

The path you mention seems to be of the MOST resistance.

Do you REALLY need the SBK parts?  Don't think the triples will work.

Least resistance:
1) get adjustable forks from a higher compatible model.
2) reuse your wheel.  [Can't you just take the cover off of the non-disk side, and bolt on a disc?]
3) Add brake parts as needed.

BlackKat

I might be able to use the wheel...thats not really my issue...obviously the forks from the 99 monster are rubbish and if I am to update them, why not get superior calipers vs the 900 monster?

Just my train of thought.....

What other forks will give me adjustablity without going to a 53X53 set up without blowing the bank?

DarkStaR

If that's the case, then go with your plan, but minus the triples.

You'll just have to get the bores of your triples sorted.

Not too sure about the speedo drive.

BlackKat

hmmmm....anyone ever bore out the 50mm to 53mm? It doesn't look like it would be an issue...plenty of material there, but I'm no machinist.

suzyj

Yeah lots of people do - it's quite common for sbk fork conversions.

2007 Monster 695 with a few mods.
2013 Piaggio Typhoon 50 2 stroke speed demon.

That certainly makes my shopping much easier for this!

The 748 doesn't use different calipers than a 900 would, they're all goldlines IIRC. Nice fork swaps aren't exactly cheap so I wouldn't plan on spending just a little.

If you're going to superbike forks and want bling brakes you might as well use SBK forks with radial mount lowers, 848/1098 etc..

There are also lots of forks from Japanese superbikes that measure 50/54 and fit in the stock triples.  You might do some searching on the GSXR forkswap before you buy.

The cheapest/easiest way is to go with adjustable units from a monster or an ST.
