I thought he had crashed and lost his leg 

In the late 1970's my brother-in-law's younger brother crashed his street bike and laid in a ditch until another rider happened to see him.  The rider picked him up, and propped him on the back of his bike and rode him to the hospital.  Turned out the brother had a broken neck, and had to where a halo for a couple months, but fully recovered.
