I have a 2009 696. I'm at 200 miles on it. One of my friends is recommending I change the oil on it already. The manual says to do it at 600. My frined has broken in a few engines (mostly Buells) and he said they shed a lot of metal in the first 200 miles. Is this true with Ducatis, or is it overkill to change it now and then again at 600 miles?

Meh. Do you feel like changing the oil or not? It certainly won't hurt a thing to do it apart from wasting some oil and a filter.

The screen will catch any metal.  I would wait the 600, you should more worried about oil dilution.

you're comparing a Harley motor to a Ducati motor  >:(

The other thing to consider that many don't, is that motors have assembly lube on the cams and other parts when put in. Having the lube mixed with the oil during break in helps make sure evything is properly lubricated ane moving correctly. Changing oil too early can remove some of this from the equation. Not sure how it may affect things, but I left the first oil change for the 600 mile service on mine.

Thanks guys. I was leaning toward waiting until 600 anyway. My friend was being kind of insistent (and a little paranoid).   :) I just wanted some other opinions before he tried to con me into wasting oil. I figured the screen and the magnetic drain plug would take care of any metal, but it's my first new bike so I had no FHE with breaking one in.
