Any one ever convert a carb'd monster to FI?

Ive been contemplating doing a microsquirt system on my 1995 M900.  Ide use throttlebody's off another bike and possibly machine a new flywheel with trigger's.   I think it can be done for the same price as a set of FCR's. Well I hope.

When and IF I can get it done right I am planning on supercharging the monster.


So anyone have experience with anything like this?

Vee Two in Australia has moved into the supercharging business and makes a kit for 2 valve FI Monsters.

Doug Lofgren's Motorcycle Performance Services site has a 900ss featured that was converted across to FI. Didn't look straightforward but doable.
I'd get the FCRs. Got some and never looked back.

I should be working around the house. Back to my jobs now.

A couple of items about supercharging to think about:

- limited boost and short intervals.  It will work better than turbocharging the 2V Ducati due to heat and easily melted pistons / detonation problems.  Plan on getting a set of forged pistons made.  None are commercially available.  The few sets I know of aren't cheap.  Ditto for good connecting rods being almost mandatory. 

- how would you spin the supercharger?  There are a couple of projects in OZ done in regard to supercharging.  VeeTwo had a few problems with their setup.  Best method would be to spin pulley from the crank but how do you connect to it?  If you run off the layshaft setup, it is running at 50% engine speed.  If you use an external belt pulley -- plan on putting an outside bearing to support the load induced into the shaft.

- Best bet to do supercharging is with a 3rd party fuel system as you are looking at.  You can add a boost sensor which would make fuel mapping much easier.  Ditto for a 3rd party electrical system to retard the timing when boost / detonation starts to happen.

- Also you need to look at packaging / fuel tank location, air intake, etc.  All can be solved with some work.

Is it a cheap solution?  No.  Plan on breaking a few parts along the way. 

I have a project down the road with a turbocharged 4V engine in a DesmoDevil chassis.  There are some perks to the 4V watercooled heads when it comes to turbocharging and supercharging.

here is the gameplan.

Machine new rods out of 7 series aluminum, H beam style, slightly shorter to get 8:1 compression.

Machine a bearing housing and sprocket off the crank for drive of the blower.

Intercooler setup, blow through throttle bodys.



I just want to build it for the twisty mountains i live in and turboing is the last thing i want. I want smooth linear boost right off the bottom.

Why do all that machining on the rods?!?  Lift the barrels a mm or 2 and be done w/it.  You're going to rip it apart in a few months anyways...

I've swapped a '99 SS750i.e. injection set-up onto a '99 M750 to answer your question.

My thoughts on driving a blower on a Ducati V-twin:
Remove the entire alternator BS off the left side of the crank
Mill a flat cover w/a seal for the crankshaft (you'll have to address the engine oil flowing out of the L.side crank end)
Use that now 'open & exposed' crank end to drive a pulley that will spin a small alternator (Triumphs used to come w/small alternator that were known for OVER-charging a battery...odd, eh?) and then also spin the small blower.

lower the compression by dishing the piston crowns (they're slightly domed as std) or opening the chamber.  raising the head or lowering the piston screws up the squish, which can make it more prone to detonation even tho it has lower comp.

I liked the idea of using the rear cylinder as a supercharger for the front cylinder. I forget who did it, but it sure looked like a cool project.

I'd always wondered why nobody had ever done that... the answer is apparently that they have  ;D

Mind you, I'm not quite sure you handle the FI mapping on that design (with the whole air reservoir thing)

FI with the linear air pressure of a conventional supercharger - relatively easy
FI with variable boost - not as easy.
