Speed reads from...? on new Ducatis?

On my '95 m900 the speedo reads from the front wheel. I'm curious where the new Ducatis read speed from. Another moto group that I'm on has someone talking about a gearing change for an R6 and someone said that he would have to adjust his speedo. I said that it was lame that he had to do that and someone relatively knowledgeable about bikes said that most new bikes don't take speed off the wheel anymore. I find this odd and was curious if the new Ducs still do.
ErkZ NOT in SLO w/ his '95 m900!
The end is in sight! Gotta buckle down and get to work!

new monsters read the bolts on the rear brake. so gearing change doesn't adjust anything. but tire height would.

I think what you may have confused is that in previous years, bikes typically used a speedometer cable to the panel from the front wheel (I had seen a few which used a location near the countersprocket as well).  My 2011 696 receives the speed signal from the ABS ECU which receives inputs from both the front and rear wheels but likely only sends the rear speed to the ECU (I have not tested this by disconnecting either).

To additionally complicate matters, the speed is not feed via pulse signal to the dashboard but rather is packaged in a CAN BUS format and fed to the dash with other parameters, such as tach, engine temperature, etc. via a twisted-pair network line.  If you have an ABS model, you have at least (3) computers in your machine, the dashboard, ecu, and ABS ecu!!!

I assumed you were referring to non-abs, but your answer is likely applicable to abs models as well...  I'll have to experiment with my wheel sensors to determine which one the ABS ecu is sending speed info for.  More than likely, I'll just get a fault and nothing, but worth a try...
