Damn those unplanned thunderstorms  [bang]

Was planning two days of Sierra riding around Donner and Lake Tahoe area, but now looking to avoid the likely thunderstorms predicted for the next few days.

Anyone have any good suggestions for where to ride here in CA that might involve less chance of rain?

Was thinking maybe heading south, maybe HWY 1 (probably foggy but OK).  Starting in East Bay area.

Suggest away... [popcorn]

Take Highway 1 down to Cambria.  There is nothing much interesting after Cambria if you keep heading further south, so I like to turn around there and come back on Highway 1 also.  Get gas in Monterey or one of the other nearby towns and you'll be good for the trip down.  It's very expensive in between.

It's probably past the tourist high season, but I usually try to get to Carmel by about 8:00 a.m. or so and it's pretty much clear sailing all the way south.  There has always been traffic coming back in the afternoon.  There won't be any rain there and might not be any fog either.

Have fun.

I'd agree with Scott that Hwy 1 is reliably spectacular. There are some nice roads around Santa Ynez if you decide to go past Cambria.

Also, heading north on 1 is great - follow it up to Mendocino, and then take Hwy 128 back.

If you want to stay warm, try some wine country tours. If you go to most moto shops they should have a "Mad Maps" section that'll have maps for NorCal, with lots of good routes.

Bummer about the Sierra weather though.

[thumbsup] thanks for the suggestions guys. we're heading out now and decided to go up north and 128 is definitely in the route. I recall from a long while back that hwy 20 also is nice n twisty so we'll hit that and make up the  rest.

off to find some  [bacon]
