Life of Fuel

So my Monster has sat for the last 2 months and I fired her up the day before yesterday and she ran like a top. Took my bike across town, made several stops, and came back home. This morning I tried to fire it up to ride it to work and all I got was the constant turning over but no start. The spark plugs were replaced within the last year and are iridium plated, so I highly doubt that's an issue. Is there any reason to think that it's an issue with the fuel? If so, any suggestions on what to do about it?

I'd still pull those plugs and check them out - what they look like might be able to steer you in the right direction.

If it was sitting for that long, that gas has varnished and might have possibly clogged up something.

My current problem sounds similar, but I got water into the fuel lines. It ran fine until water hit the carbs and then nothing...bummed.

Those damn gremlins.  Try to isolate the fuel/spark issue first.  Pour a bit of gas or starter fluid in the carb openings and see if she fires up.  If it does then target the carbs.  If no fire then its possibly an ignition issue.  Also, while you were cranking it, did you smell gas?  That's another indication that there's no spark.  If your bike ran fine for a while and then all of a sudden it didn't, then its probably not a "bad gas" issue although I would still change it after sitting that long.

Oh, sorry I forgot to mention that my Monster's an 03, fuel injected, 620.


One thing I will add is that when I turn the key, I no longer hear what I would describe as a high pitched frequency noise that I've always heard before.

Dont know much about the FI system but I would venture to say that the high pitched squeal is the fuel pump.  That's one of the first thing to go on when you turn the key.  Check the fuse for it.  Maybe some members here with a FI model could troubleshoot this better.

Check the fuse.

Check the electrical connector going to the tank as well, disconnect and reconnect it.

I'll do that and post up if that was the problem - thanks, that was something I hadn't thought of!

Yes, that is the fuel pump. If it's not turning on when you turn the ignition then it is not working, and not sending fuel to the fuel injectors.

Start with checking the fuse. If that is a no go, check all the connections to the fuel pump. As a last resort, changing the fuel pump will be your only bet.

I am not sure where it is located on your bike, but probably inside the tank.
