I'd go Hypermotard and keep the Monster. Do you ever ride 2 up? The Hyper is Duc's best hottie hauler.
2003 620ie red, cored stock pipes, Hit -Air jacket, nice deriere.

Between a Hyper and 848, I'd go Hyper. The 848 was miserable on the street for me (I prefer upright riding position for the street). Wind blast on the Hyper sucks though.

Ride them both though, and see which you prefer.

If I was looking at a new Duc I wouldn't get either...I'd get either a Streetfighter or M1100...but that's me.

Like Mr. I said...other nice bikes out there besides Ducati as well. My KTM 990 SMT is a superb moto. Kind of like a Hyper with more power and decent wind protection.  [thumbsup]

Similar story with the SuperDuke.  Got a similar upright position, only with an extra helping of dumb!   [thumbsup]

you have and are keeping the monster?
i Vote the new bmw S1000r. 848 would be cool an all but damn that BMW is the business
motard is definately a hooligan bike.

Rode a 796 and an 1100 HM.  The 796 is seriously weak in my book.  Perhaps a Termi-kit would help but it was just out of steam way too quick for me.  The 1100 though...  [evil]

On a down-side for the HM:  ALL the wind hits your chest.  A Monster will break it up to mid-chest, but a HM you get nothing.

Mr. I's right:  Test-ride EVERYTHING!!!  I got 3 days on a Street Triple R a few months ago.  Was pleasantly surprised by the power, exhaust note, styling and price-tag.  Nearly $ for $ with the 696 and it would eat-it-alive...  (in my opinion...)

Oh, and buying new is for suckers.  Try to find someone who has the bike you want and it's a year old w/some goodies on it.  You'll score it for less $ than new and get the goodies too.  [thumbsup]

HELL YEA!  That little triple is one badass powerplant!

it all depends on what kind of roads you plan to ride on.  if you cant, go for the multistrada or a bigger monster or even a streetfighter

i went from an r6 to a 750 monster, i thought that was an upgrade.  i think a lot of people think more power = upgrade but my decision was based on how i would use it.  i didn't take it to the track but rather went on long distance road trips and around town which was difficult with a sportbike. there were plenty of times i just didnt' want to take it out b/c it was uncomfortable. just because i could get there 2 seconds faster doesn't matter if i dont feel like getting on it.  it was pretty fun on the highways though.

with the duc, there is considerably less power but i use all of it and it gets ridden much much more, rain or shine.

if u plan to take it to the track, you have your answer.  if not, the hyper is probably more comfortable with general riding.

if its all about emotion, i'd go with the 848.  i would love to own a monster and an 848.  then i'd be very happy.

Lovin all the response and I guess I should have been more specific.  The monster is going to my mother who rides (kinda) as she wants a bike she knows (she's seen me work hours on mine and now wants it as an upgrade from her Ninja 250) and is willing to help finance my upgrade in exchange for the Monster.  I am planning on test riding everything I can in the next few weeks and might be test riding a HM1100 tomorrow.  When the 1098 and 848 came out, I immediately fell in love with them.  I thought that those beautiful beasts were the best looking motorcycles ever made.

As for my usual riding styles, I'm getting a lot faster and sharper on the roads (I feel so at least) but other than when I ride up to Boulder, CO from Dallas (where I live), it's mainly city riding with the occasional backroads so I won't go insane.  Sadly there just aren't that many twisties around where I live.  My hour long commute is mainly straight road, so I was thinking a hypermotard would fuel my hooliganism and hopefully help keep me entertained on the straighter roads.

I'd love an S1000 BMW, but there's no way I can afford that.  But I'm welcome to other suggestions outside the Ducati line-up if you guys are still willing to give me your two's.

Thanks for all the great advice and keep it comin!

M900

I have both a 96 Monster and an 08 HM.  When it was time for another Duc, I went with the HM  because of the type of riding I typically do -- more city commutes -- which made the HM (and the Monster) ideal.  Without bar risers, I think the 848 would suck if you're typically doing an hour on the slab.   The wind blast on the HM was pretty severe, but the aftermarket windscreen fixed that...  Either way, you should just spend an afternoon riding both and make up your mind.

Well, why limit to Ducati? Lots of nice bikes out there.

Go test ride one of everything that anyone will let you throw a leg over and buy what you like the most.
