Novice Painting Question

Thinking about cutting a funky design into my rear mudguard and wanted to paint it red. Has anyone painted the plastic on their Duc that can offer some best practices before I even begin this project?  I'd be really interested in knowing what spray paint to purchase that would be pretty durable.

Don't bother painting the underside of the hugger. For the rest you'll need to clean any residue that's petroleum based. Sand (be diligent, but not compulsive) with fine grit sandpaper, and paint with plastic specific rattle can. Clear coat matte.

I painted a headlight fairing using Rustoleum Universal Advanced Formula All-Surface Paint followed by Rustoleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover Matte Clear. Doesn't quite match my dark duc, but good enough for guvmint wurk. Sanded with wet 600 grit after removing the stripes (it was from an s2r) and cleaned with water followed by windex (2 cycles) to make sure and get all the dust off. (All on sale a while back at Home Despot)

Let it dry for a couple days (i.e. I was too lazy to do it the same day) and sprayed it on the corner of Mass Ave during rush hour. You'd think folks had never seen anyone spray paint before.

1st ask yourself 1 question....and this applies directly to how much work you want to make for yourself...do you want what you are painting to be something people notice but don't go up close to look at...or they look at at a 10 foot or further distance...or within a few feet up close?

After looking at the rear fender guard and determining that even with a nice looking cut, people really wouldn't notice it I'm thinking of abandoning this mission.  But the intel was helpful as I might color my dual headlights at some point this winter.

only reason I asked was because of my experience from doing these old ones I did a while back on my track bike...

and of course that set of plastics got rashed and trashed and are long gone and I have since yet to do something even remotely close to replacing...so the bike sits currently like this now...(only different exhaust on it)

and BTW...that old paint job, looked great from 10 feet or more away...but up close, looked like propa shite for what it was...hence why I asked how much work you want to put in...
