Send in the 3D drones
Ashima Devices has developed a 3D surveillance technology for use with the company's ForceField drones. These small unmanned helicopters can be clipped to a soldier's standard ALICE field-gear kit. When deployed, they provide a real-time, 3D view of the battlefield, including what's around a corner or rooftop, and can even simulate storming a building.

The hexacoptor thread made me think of these^^

Sending in Mosquitoes
Lantronix and Stara Technologies have jointly developed a battleground system called the "Mosquito" that intelligently delivers plasma packs, batteries, ammunition, food, and other supplies to battlefields. Lantronix developed the tracking database and telemetry transit system, which delivers GPS-guided containers developed by Stara that can weigh up to 150 pounds. The containers can be deployed from a C130 airplane, and can be sent to a precise spot on the battleground for a soft landing via a parachute.

Calling in the HULC
Lockheed Martin is developing the HULC exoskeleton, which provides an energy boost for troops and helps prevent injuries during a battle. The flexible exoskeleton allows troops to carry as much as 200 pounds of gear over rough terrain by supplementing their muscles. The device is modulated to align with body movements using an on-board computer chip, and allows the soldier to squat and crawl during combat.

Isn't the safest way to keep a soldier from being hurt the most simple?

True.  Please don't turn this into anything political though.   ;)   I posted it because this new technology is pretty d*mn cool!

Seems like the devices could have civilian uses too...  Delivering supplies in the event of a natural disaster, search and rescue with the 3D drones, HULC could be worn by rescuers performing in rough terrain.

As usual, the best tech stuff comes from a military background and filters down to us civies.

Pretty interesting stuff.   [thumbsup]

I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it

great in theory but society without conflict is a long way off, if it's even possible to get there.

I have to admit, it was my first thought as well.

The next best thing is develop technology that protects better or removes people from the danger zone completely.

Military tech always blows me away (no pun intended)

this stuff is awesome

The exoskeleton would be great for warehouse applications, eventually (as the price comes down), but it would be great right now for first responders and wildfire fighting.

It's easy to get lured into the sexy tech aspect of this stuff, but thinking about its real purpose scares the hell out of me. I loved building model military aircraft as a kid because I didn't think about the function of that amazing engineering (and it is amazing).
