I also heard talk of pneumatic valves on the Eurosport coverage at Catalunya. Not sure how credible it is.

I don't understand why.  The bike is already at the minimum weight possible, are they going for a handling change?

It certainly would. Just something I heard on the Eurosport coverage from someone they interviewed, so take it for what it's worth.

Seems like it'll make tuneable flex in the frame more difficult to acheive than with the trellis. Huh?

It'll be easier to get flexibility in certain directions, whether those directions are what the bike needs is another matter entirely...
I foresee lots of time/money/energy spent, but it may not really bear fruit.

For cars, the pursuit is maximum stiffness at minimum weight, but they also have very severe crash/penetration specs to meet also.
I don't see a lot of technology transfer from cars, other than in the fabrication.
