Battery strap on Monster 1100

Ok....I'm low tech....have the dealer do everything...so don't make fun of me with this question....please!

I bought a new 09 Monster 1100 about 2 weeks ago...love it by the way....I've probably owned 20 motorcycles over the years and for all out FUN this is it!

Anyway, I was looking throught the packet I got with the bike and besides the black plastic insturment cover that replaces the "faring", there was a black strap in the packet with a "knob" on one end and a square hole in the other.

All I can figure is this is the strap that should have gone over the battery when it was installed?  Is that correct and if so can the battery bounce out of its holder?

After looking at the battery installation in the owners manual, I'm amazed at how complex the process seems!

If this is the battery strap, can I wait until the 600 mile service to have it installed OR should I have it done before I end up with a mess....I was thinking that maybe the battery is stuck in so little a space it may not be able to bounce around?
Thanks, Rob Ray

Really cheap advice coming:

Not familiar with your model, but if it is indeed the battery hold down strap, I'd put it back in.  Vibration is not good for batteries.  Don't know if there is a chance of shorting something in there either, and that can' be good.

the battery really has no place to go since its surronded by the tank but i'd streach it over it to hold it in better because you can.  batteries can crack but probally wont since the plastic holder has rubber on the bottom and its in there pretty tight even without the strap.  [bacon]

it's not as hard as it seems to get to the battery on the 1100.

search in tech for battery tenders or putting on the DP ecu or something similar

i've done a few write ups on the steps.

I have the same bike and looking at it at first you wonder to yourself 'WOW' i have to complete all that just to get to the battery/ecu!!!! old Monster was 2 bolts and they were the battery terminals... anyways the answer is no its actually quite easy and I have personally installed battery tender & DP ecu with no issues.

You dont need to complete everything Ducati have listed in the manual they make it sound more in-depth than it actually is.

01. Loosen and remove the bolt under the seat.
02. Unhook the o2 cable that is held under the seat 'watch for that one!'
03. Take off all the bolts around the tank and side pieces etc exposing the fuel tank.
04. The tubing for the fuel tank will actually allow you to lift up the tank enough for what you need.
05. Then just prop up the tank with a piece of wood OR grab your missus to hold and watch her complain about the weight because you purposely did this with a full tank 'your fault of course!' :) ...then your done!!

On a side note: I assume you would only have to follow all instructions in manual if you wanted to ripe the entire tank off the bike which would be rare.
