abnormal sound
«
on:
December 27, 2010, 06:07:54 AM »
Guys i have a problem with my monster 1100s, everytime i drive through a bumpy road i hear a sound. But if the concrete surface is smooth no problem, any thoughts on this? What part of the bike should I check? Any way of tightening the triple tree clamp? OR is my suspension too soft? I'm worried something might be loose. And the dealership is too far away. And another thing, how do you adjust the ohlins fork? where should i position the s - h?

You can try this for the fork set up (no FHE and I don't know how it will help your bike)

Noise? What kind of noise?
Is it there when you push/pull on the bars, with engine shut off? With/without brakes applied?
Have you checked everything for loose bolts? Fender? Oil cooler?

Hmm...so does everything feel solid? No handlebar movement? Check the gauges and fender. Those are the only things I can think of that would move without SERIOUS problems. Also, try to describe the said "sound." Clunking, clicking, etc.

Exactly when do you here the sound? all the time? when you hit the gas? when you get off the gas?

Check the front fender and the brake line that crosses over the rear of the fender, my fender was slapping the hold down clip.

I can hear no noise if i push/pull the handlebar with engine off.. I can only hear it everytime i run through a rough road, i dont know how to describe the sound exactly but it's more like a metal to rubber friction of some sort.. checked the bolts, everything is tight that's why im a bit confused where to look.. thinking about the suspension might be too soft or maybe it has to do with the triple clamp..

I'm not sure, but let's start eliminating.....
tire pressure ok? (if it's very low, the tire
can
hit the rim)
brake lines well off the wheel? (if not, they
can
touch)
remove front fender..... (to make sure it's not the fender rubbing the wheel)
loose chain? (just in case it's not coming from the front)
In case none of the advice given here or above resolves your issues, I think you have to prepare for a dealer visit.
If the dealer is too far away, another mc shop can probably help you diagnose the issue.

Is it a short, sharp sound.... or more of "creak", like the sound of a door on unoiled hinges?

Sir
tire pressure is 30psi
break lines off the wheel
il try to remove the front fender incase that's the problem
no loose chain.
As of the moment i'm waiting for my new battery and battery charger, after i can install it then i can test the abnormal sound if it's still there. It's not a sharp sound, more of a thud thud thud everytime i hit holes or damaged parts in the pavement.
Unfortunately for me i have to ship my bike through cargo vessel (40 hours) just to have my bike checked by the dealer. I'll try to find a motorcycle shop familiar with big bikes, not much ducks around the area..

Anything else happening when/after the sound?
Vibration? Braking by itself? Bike acting strange?
Maybe take off the belt covers (while you're changing the battery) to see if a belt is loose or the roller bearings inside are occasionally stuck. Pull the clutch cover and see if anything is loose and makes a noise when hit hard?
No FHE, but I've heard something about hydraulic lock up in the forks, if the oil level is too high. Not the easiest thing to check for yourself, but one other thing to talk to a shop about.
