Considering that the 9/11 terrorists were pretty much Saudi nationals....

spawned and radicalized in Saudi "religious schools"

I never understood why we gave The House of Saud a free-pass

and burned down their next door neighbor's house in retaliation for 9/11 ...WMD's ablah ablah

Short response to what could be a very long discussion on that topic:

While we didn't entirely give the Sauds a free pass, there is/was simply too much money involved with the royals over there and big oil over here to allow the type of interaction that could/should have occurred.  The Sauds have a long history of exporting wahhabi extremism, and their citizen's activities in the AFPAK area was nothing new.  

The mission in Afghanistan was always multi-faceted.  There was the part about going after al-Qaeda, but attempting to rebuild the country into something more than a failed state was always there as well.  Simply put, the need for a stable foundation to exist there was always on everyone's radar, and necessary to try and keep fundamentalists from rising up again if/when we make our way out.
