Odd air temp reading

The air temp reading on my '09 696 always seemed high.  Today in an unheated garage (with fan running and open doors) with the ambient temp about 36 F, I fired up my 696 and by GF's 696 (also an '09).  Once they warmed up, her bike read 44 F; seems OK, given the exhaust heat and such.  My bike ended up with a reading of 64 F.

Could this be an indication of a bad air temp sensor?  I am worried about the ECU receiving bad info and not pumping in enough gas for the amount of air.

It runs OK.  Maybe it could run better?

Is what is diplayed on the gauge cluster the same as what is used by the ECU for fuel/air calculation?
