What's up, DMF?  I haven't posted here in like 3 years, but I'm hoping someone can straighten me out on this question.  I was replacing the clutch pack on my 2005 M1000s this evening, and I noticed that the basket looks pretty warn.  Is this something I should replace before installing my new plates?  Thanks in advance.

Mine looks worse and it works fine.

Wonder that myself a few weeks ago I just replaced the basket & plates for good measure. Unfortunately the previous owner had steel plates - aluminum basket I assume thats why it wore the way it did although I did put 12-13k on her  [laugh]. The Synder manual says to replace the plates if they are less than .128" inches the old plates measured .114"~.116" but the NewFren aluminum plates I got only measure .119"~.120"...boat in the water  :-\

Great how shagged those clutches can get and still work ok.
It gives us  time to save for a new one by the time it gets too bad. ;D

I don't know about you guys but I'd replace those baskets in a heartbeat. They would probably work OK but the more worn they are the faster they will wear out the next set of plate tabs along with increasing the wear rate on the basket itself. Excess slop/play begets even greater slop/play. Do what you will though.
No modification goes unpunished. Memento mori.  Good people drink good beer.  Things happen pretty fast at high speeds.

It's all up to your will level, your thrill level and your skill level.  Everything else is just fluff.

True. Kind of like old sprockets and a new chain scenario.
If the clutch aint slipping start saving to replace as a set. Buy the set when the symptoms tell you.
Some have been known to clean up the basket and get some ok but used plates to see them through untill they were ready to buy a full kit.
As long as slipping or grabbing or dragging symptoms are absent you have time. I bet its noisy though.

Mine looked about like that and it was loud. Changed mine out for 48 t. Very happy with it.

Whats the ballpark cost of a basket and set of plates?

I have seen good prices on those parts with our sponsors Motowheels, California Cycleworks and Monsterparts. You might get out of it for under $400 plus shipping, with discounted items.
Check out their websites.

Mine looked like that too and I just went ahead and replaced the basket with the plates. I figured with that much play it would wear out the new plates fast enough.

So a new Barnett basket with stock plates. One difference was how much quieter it was.
