I have some friends with an 06 Golf they want to sell (daughter's car in college that's unneeded)  They've tried Ebay and only got calls from companies that want to sell the car for them.

Craigslist has not worked well either.

Would they be better off on autotrader or a specific vw forum?

I hate to send them to a forum because you know how it goes when someone with one post puts up a car to sell (if they'll let someone with one post do that)

Thoughts?

How about selling it to a dealer?

If the car is in good shape, clean, and under 100K it would be of interest to them.

first off, have it detailed.  it's worth it.  place near me will shampoo and clean the interior for $100.  hand wax and polish the outside for another $100, which includes hand-cleaning the wheels.  this makes the car look taken care of.

how's the mechanical condition?  have a mechanic go over it and find anything wrong with it.  either fix it or prepare to lower the price for that.  any dents/rust?

lastly, where are you?  plenty of places right now aren't moving cars.  best time to sell a car like that is 2-3 months before college starts as parents buy their spoiled rotten piece of shit kids a car to drive while at school.

i put my volvo up for sale a while back, nearly perfect shape and asked 6000.  i got a few nibbles and 2 offers for under $4000.  no way.  i waited until last june.  had it detailed as above and put it up for sale with tons of pics on craigslist.

i got 3 people interested right away, the winner offered me $5800 and i told him i'd wait for the extra $200 and that was it, he just wrote the check for $6000.

Without knowing the car's condition/history and asking price, I am not able to comment too much.  I do believe that you can sell any car if you price it right for the local market.  Price it appropriately and get it detailed, as ducatiz suggested, and you just might get some interest.

Good luck!

If it didn't sell on Ebay or CL they probably want too much money for it given the season and or condition of the car.

Personally I don't like Ebay especially for buying anything worth thousands.  Too many scammers on there and I want to be able to personally see the item before dropping thousands.  That means only dealing locally.  Autotrader, CL, Green Sheet, etc.

If they're looking to dump the car yesterday and are willing to take wholesale offers then Carmax, dealerships, local used car buying companies, etc.

id reccomend doing something like this with it.  me and my  buddies do this every fall at the local county fairs its alot of fun and you always at least get scrap value out of the car plus alot of fun driving in the process
