Innovative 02 sensor

I have a 2000 M900ie with an aftermarket exhaust system.  I removed the air cleaner lid, and it makes beautiful music!  But, I'm not sure if it makes more power.

I'm thinking of hooking up an Innovative 02 sensor and seeing what the A/F ratio looks like with/without the airbox cover.

It runs nice, but I'm suspicious that it's a little lean - especially at cruise (around 4250 RPM).

Can anyone offer suggestions as to either an ECU upgrade/update, or a Power Commander (or similar).

Thanks, Danny

Howie

Danny, I suggest you save the money and work you would invest on the O2 sensor, buy a Power Commander (sold by many of our sponsors)

and use the money you saved on a good custom map.

I've used the innovative 02 sensor on some projects. You have to have a bike that is NOT using the O2 sensor though. If you unhook your present sensor, the bike would go into limp mode and you would not see a true representation of the running map. Another option would be that you fashion up another bung to your exhaust or rig up some fittings and tubing to get a feed from your exhaust to the Innovate sensor. Again, if you have a DP ECU, it's a lot easier to use the existing bung for the sensor. I wired mine up so that it uses the battery tap, the readout is nice and responsive.

It's probably more realistic to just get the Gunsen Gastester instead as it is already set up for tuning bikes. It does require some patience while the device warms up and calibrates.

+1 on howie.
And put the lid back on until that`s done, most likely too lean runnin now.

Thanks, everyone

The air cleaner lid will be going back on before the next ride.  I'll sure miss the "stereo".  lol

I have an Innovative device, and I believe there is an unused bung on the front exhaust tube.  I haven't checked to see if it's 14 mm (to match my thermocouple), but if not, I could weld in a bung.

The bike is a 2000, and I purchased it two weeks ago from a friend.  It had 4000 miles, and I've ridden it another 500.  It still has the original tires, belts, etc. - never been serviced, although my friend had changed the oil at around 1000 miles.  I changed the fuel, oil, and installed a new battery.  Started right up and runs nicely.

I'm going to install new belts and tires within the week.

This is my first Ducati, and I'm really enjoying it.

Well, stock a 2000 has no O2 sensor

But before you go doing all that stuff - you've got a lot of other maintenance items. The belt *need* to be replaced. They are a 12k or 2 year replacement cycle. You're belts are 8-9 years beyond that threshold. If a belt lets go you will be very very unhappy.

Your tires are also well beyond the general manufacturers replacement age spec. It'll vary a touch from maker to maker, but the mark is usually around 5 years.

But, you're on those items already

Next, your hydraulics (brakes and clutch) need to be flushed.

You should probably replace the oil in the forks too... You might want to get it up on a stand and have a close look a the chain while rotating the rear wheel by hand (engine OFF). I'd be shocked and impressed in the event that the chain doesn't have a number of stiff or frozen links unless it was stored in a climate controlled place all this time.

Suffice to say - you've got a lot of items that you need to do before you start to play too much.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Hello Sad Panda

You're spot on with your advice and observations.  Thank you.

I checked, cleaned, and oiled the chain.  It was nice and free - no frozen links.  Flushing the brake and clutch are on my "hit" list.  I had not considered the forks, and will change the oil.

I rode it yesterday (air cleaner lid removed), instead of pulling the much needed maintenance.  Some freeway - light throttle @ 4200 - and kept the revs up on the country road between the freeway and my house.  I removed the front plug, and was surprised to see that it had some "color".  Didn't look lean at all.  Exhaust pipes are very clean.

Wheels are coming off today or tomorrow for new tires, and it will probably not get ridden again until the maintenance is accomplished.

The "first order of business" after the maintenance will be to install the Innovative and check the A/F.  Has anyone been on a dyno and developed a feel  for what these engines "like" at peak hp/tq?

Thanks, Danny

I was bad.  I rode yesterday, instead of changing belts. lol

I did lube the speedo cable (calmed the needle a bunch), and was going to change out the brake/clutch fluids.  Only had DOT3, so put it off.

I reinstalled the airbox lid, and saw no difference in performance.  If anything, it seems to run better with the lid off.  Possibly my imagination.  Hate the silence!

The previous owner probably richened CO trim to try to make up for the open air box.  This helps, but is mostly an idle adjustment and the bike will still run a little lean at high load/speed.

Weren't those ecu's re-flashable with FIM maps?

You might contact Silverback Performance...now Ducati Minneapolis about it. It should be cheaper than a replacement/add on.

Yep, at this point Silverback may be the only ones doing this.

QuoteI have an Innovative device,

Does it have any logging possibility?

i have the lc-1 and it has multiple outputs.  you can set one output to mimic the stock narrowband sensor and connect that to the stock o2 connector and then have the other output connected to whatever data logger you have.  that way you wont have to add another o2 bung
