Parenting fail or win?

I wouldn't do that with my kid, but I as one of those kids that rode on my dad's tank at a very young age I have to say win. He use to let me hold the bars. I don't think he ever let go though. I think this is the sole reason I ride motorcycles today.

When I was about 6, my dad would put me in his lap in the drivers seat, and I would steer while he worked the gas and brake. When I got too big to fit, I would shift gears for him while he drove. He would get up to speed, hit the clutch lever, and say "Go!" and I would put it into the next gear.
Those are some of my fondest memories, and probably the main reason I turned into the gearhead I am today.

+1  My dad did the same with me.  Riding on the tank when I was 6-7 was the greatest thing at that time.  I remember bragging to my mom afterwards and she just rolled her eyes.  I did the gear shift thing with him, too.  Occassionally, I would miss a shift (going from 3rd to 2nd, instead of to 4th).  He would put it back to 3rd and have me try again, all while we were coasting down the road.

I know I am shitting all over everyone's cherished memories by saying this, but... this is a non-win for me. 

I saw this, thought about taking my three-year-old on my bike, without a helmet or gear on a public road.  There is just no way I would do that.  The best case scenario is that we have a great time.  The worst case is that we are both killed.  My thinking is that we have a great time together at the park, too.  It doesn't matter how likely I think the the worst case is, doing that would not be fun enough to justify even a minuscule risk of the worst case.

No, I think I will wait until she's old enough to wear gear, let her ride her own mini dirt bike.

i thought about the gear issue too.. & the gear in many countries is not required, so i left that out of my thought process. i'm not saying it shouldn't be required, it just isn't, so he probably doesnt even think about gear. he didn't have any on himself... just like not so long ago here, seatbelts weren't required, car seats weren't required, so people didn't use them. & when they weren't required, no one would have called you a bad parent for not using them.
