What to use to clean and protect an engraved brass table top

I bought this beautiful brass topped table at an estate sale.  Apparently it was brought back from Siam shortly before it became Thailand.  It has an ornately engraved top with black and red tint or "antiquing" in the recessed spots.  First, does anyone know of any metal cleaning products that are not so harsh that they would harm the tint/antiquing?  Someone prior to myself used something harsh, and some of it has worn away already, but I'd like to preserve what's left.  Also, is there any kind of wax or coating that won't harm the tint/antiquing, but would prevent the brass from tarnishing so quickly?

Believe it or not hot sauce will clean it, not sure what it will do to the "antiquing"

Is the Black and red paint?

It can be protected.

You know the black stuff in the deep grooves on a lot of class rings?  It's similar stuff.  Some of it is black and some of it is red.  I'll see if I can take a decent pic of it.

Brasso would work for the metal but I don't know what it would do to stuff like the antiqing.

I would think you could wax it for protection, or some kind of clear-coat.
