Okay, so I've read all the posts on backfiring, and have some ideas.  Here is what I'm seeing on my M750 from 2001.

Three times in the past year, I've been out on longer rides and my Monster has backfired then suffered a complete loss of power and the engine has died.  This has always happened at speeds of over 40 mph.

This forces me to pull over, and then after I've pulled over and waited a minute, the bike starts up fine. One of the times this happened was on a 100+ degree day.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to a good place to look?  The bike has 22k miles, mods are listed in my sig.  Am I at risk of damaging my engine here?

Is it just a single 'bang' then it's dead?

Or does it do a bunch of backfiring then die?

How many long rides have you done in the past year?

How far into the ride does it do it?

Single bang, then lurching, then dead.  This last time, it occurred on the 25-mile ride home after riding all day (over 100 miles of advanced riding school - was high rpm 20-min sessions most of the day).

I've done maybe 5 rides over 100 miles in the past year.   It seems to occur around 20-30 miles of hot/spirited/hard riding.

Thank you for your help, Speeddog!

Calling what I've done so far as 'help' is a bit of a reach.  [laugh]

The time-dependence of it makes me think the fuel pump is weak, but that usually doesn't present as a bang-lurch-die.

Ignition system is essentially two parallel channels, so not likely that.

Perhaps the tank venting is compromised.

Or an electrical issue.

My 2001 m750 did that , after 25-30 min. of riding it went pop -pop then i ripped it home and hocked the battery charger up and took a full charge it 30-45 min. It was the stator so $140  fron RICKS MOTORSPORTS and it cured it . TEST THE BATTERY AT FULL CHARGE AND THE 3 YELLOW WIRES FROM THE STATOR TO SEE IF THERE GROUNDING OUT .. EASY FIX BRO .
